The Paradox of Surviving Tragedy

The Paradox of Surviving Tragedy

Survivor guilt is the heavy psychological burden felt by those who live through disasters while others perish. Even though they are the survivors, many victims feel as though they are being punished for outliving their loved ones.

Initially identified among Holocaust survivors, this condition reflects how the human brain often struggles to process why one person lives while another does not. Rather than a distinct disorder, modern psychology now classifies it as a core symptom of PTSD. It frequently affects people in high-stakes fields like medicine when they lose patients they fought to save. This deep sense of undeserved existence can eventually trigger severe depression if left unaddressed.
