The Disney Movie That Almost Never Happened

Disney's comedy The Emperor's New Groove began as a serious musical epic titled Kingdom of the Sun. After production stalled, the studio scrapped the entire concept to create the zany, llama-focused slapstick film we know today.

The original production was intended to be a grandiose Broadway-style musical inspired by The Prince and the Pauper. When the creative team realized the story was becoming too complex and unengaging, they completely rebooted the project mid-development. This mid-stream pivot is legendary in animation circles because they effectively threw away years of hard work. By embracing a lighter, character-driven comedy style, they turned a troubled production into a cult classic.
