The Blood Type System You Never Knew

For decades, scientists mistook the LW blood system for the famous Rh factor. While they are genetically distinct, they are close partners, as the LW antigen shows up much more strongly on cells that are Rh-positive.

The LW system was named after its discoverers, Landsteiner and Wiener, who first noticed it while studying Rhesus monkeys. It took over forty years for experts to realize it was actually a separate entity from the Rh system. Most people carry the common LWa antigen, while the variant LWb is exceptionally rare in the human population. This hidden connection shows just how complex and deeply intertwined our blood chemistry truly is.
