This global childhood game actually originated in China during the Han Dynasty. It was originally called shoushiling and featured animals like frogs, slugs, and snakes instead of rock, paper, and scissors.

The game evolved significantly before reaching its modern form in Japan. In these early versions, a thumb represented a frog, a pinky was a slug, and an index finger stood for a snake.
