The Vanished Japanese Farming Community

A thriving Japanese-American farming community once defined the hills of Palos Verdes, California, before it was completely erased from history. Only a handful of families remained by the time the community vanished.

Long before the luxury estates and golf courses arrived, these families transformed the rugged landscape into productive flower and vegetable fields. This project works to unearth the stories of these pioneers whose contributions were largely ignored as the area modernized. By tracking down descendants and old records, organizers are piecing together a lost chapter of coastal California. It serves as a powerful reminder of how quickly local histories can be paved over by rapid development.
