Deep inside the Crab Nebula lies a pulsar that spins thirty times every second. This collapsed star is the leftover heart of a massive explosion that ancient astronomers saw lighting up the daytime sky nearly a thousand years ago.
When a massive star dies, its core collapses into a dense object known as a neutron star. The Crab Pulsar acts like a cosmic lighthouse, shooting beams of radiation across space as it rotates with incredible speed. It was the first object ever confirmed as the remnant of a supernova observed by humans. Its discovery in 1968 fundamentally changed how we understand the final stages of stellar evolution.
