Asteroids Are Color Coded Rocks

Astronomers classify asteroids by their unique color and light reflection patterns. These spectral signatures reveal what the space rocks are made of, ranging from metallic iron to carbon-rich materials.

Just like a chemical fingerprint, the light bouncing off an asteroid tells us if it is a hunk of metal, silicate stone, or ancient carbon. Scientists use these light patterns to group them into classes like C-type for carbon or M-type for metallic. Large bodies like Ceres actually have layers like a planet, but smaller asteroids are often uniform chunks of raw space material. It is a brilliant way to map the mineral wealth of our solar system from millions of miles away.
