Mars Has as Much Land as Earth

Despite being only half the size of our planet, Mars has a surface area equal to all of Earth’s dry land combined. It is a vast, frozen desert where the thin atmosphere prevents any liquid water from pooling on the surface.

You might expect a smaller planet to have less space, but because Earth is covered by vast oceans, Mars holds a surprising amount of terrestrial real estate. The planet is covered in rust-like iron oxide, which gives it that iconic red glow. While it holds water in the form of frost and massive polar ice caps, the low atmospheric pressure causes any liquid to evaporate almost instantly. Exploring this giant, lonely desert remains one of humanity's greatest upcoming challenges.
