The Monk Who Created Bhutan

Bhutan was unified not by a politician or general, but by a Tibetan Buddhist monk fleeing political persecution. Ngawang Namgyal established a unique national identity that exists to this day.

After escaping rival religious factions in Tibet, this visionary leader sought refuge in the southern mountains. He successfully repelled multiple invasions and crafted a distinct legal and cultural system that unified scattered local tribes. His title, Zhabdrung, became synonymous with the nation's spiritual and secular sovereignty. Even centuries later, his influence remains the bedrock of Bhutanese governance and tradition.
