Guiding Light Through Empty Space
Scientists have invented fibers that guide light through hollow centers rather than solid glass. By using complex geometric patterns, these fibers trap beams in a vacuum, defying the traditional rules of optics.
Standard optical fibers rely on solid glass cores to keep light trapped inside. In contrast, these structured fibers use a microscopic lattice to create a protective barrier that forces light to travel through the empty hole. This breakthrough allows for faster communication speeds and high-power lasers that would otherwise melt typical glass cables. It is essentially a cage for light built from empty space.
