The First Bicycle Had No Pedals

Invented in 1817, the original bicycle was a wooden contraption powered entirely by the rider pushing their feet against the ground. It functioned more like a modern balance bike than the pedal-driven machines we ride today.

Karl Drais created this vehicle, known as the dandy horse, to help people travel faster than walking speed without relying on horses. Riders sat on a wooden frame and scooted themselves forward, steering with a simple front wheel. Despite its lack of gears or pedals, it laid the essential groundwork for all future cycling inventions. It remains a fascinating reminder that even the most complex machines often begin with a very simple design.
