Medieval cathedrals were built using massive wooden treadwheels powered entirely by humans walking inside them. A single worker pacing like a hamster could hoist enormous stone blocks for castle walls.

These cranes functioned like giant hamster wheels for laborers. By stepping on the interior slats, the person provided the torque needed to rotate a winch and lift heavy loads through a pulley system. It was a ingenious way to harness physical effort during an era without electricity or steam power. You can still see these historic machines preserved in some of the oldest cathedrals across Europe today.
