The Bird That Is Not A Tanager

Despite its misleading name, the western tanager is actually a member of the cardinal family. This vibrant songbird was misclassified for decades based on its appearance before genetics revealed its true relatives.

Bird enthusiasts often get confused by the western tanager because it shares very little in common with the true tanagers of the tropics. Scientists eventually realized that its distinct song and unique feather patterns matched those of cardinals and grosbeaks much more closely. It is a perfect example of how evolution can sometimes lead to very different birds looking surprisingly similar. This rebranding helps biologists better understand how these colorful species are related across the Americas.
