The original internet design only allowed for 4.3 billion unique addresses, a limit reached years ago. We are now in a digital sprawl where the old system cannot house every new device we connect to the web.

To solve this, experts developed a new standard called IPv6 that provides an astronomical number of possible addresses. The two systems currently run side-by-side to keep the modern web functional. It is essentially a massive architectural renovation of the world wide web happening right under our noses.
