The Difference Between Nests and Hives

While we call any bee home a beehive, scientists make a clear distinction. A hive is strictly a man-made structure, whereas a nest is any natural cavity or exposed site where a colony lives.

This linguistic split highlights the long history of humans managing bees for honey production. Bees are naturally inclined to build nests in hollow trees or rock crevices to protect their young and store food. When we build them a home, we call it a hive to distinguish it from their wild architectural feats.
