You Can Literally Feel Others' Pain
Empathy is more than just being kind; it is a biological process where your brain physically mirrors the sensations of others. When you see someone hurt, your own body often fires the same neurons as if you were in pain yourself.
This physical reaction, known as somatic empathy, allows us to literally feel what another person is experiencing. Beyond physical pain, our brains also mirror the emotions and perspectives of those around us to help build social bonds. Scientists have found that this deep connection is hardwired into our nervous systems from birth. It is the primary reason why witnessing someone else's distress can make you feel genuinely uncomfortable or sad.
