Ancient Egyptian Life Captured on Trash

Thousands of ancient legal documents and personal letters were perfectly preserved in Egyptian desert trash heaps. These scraps reveal intimate details of daily life, such as divorce settlements and slave manumissions, from over two millennia ago.

These documents were found on papyrus and broken pottery shards, known as ostraca, discarded near border fortresses. Because the region is exceptionally dry, these everyday records survived where others would have rotted away. They provide a rare window into the lives of common people rather than just pharaohs or elites. You can even read actual complaints about property and business deals written in the 5th century BCE.
