Between 1832 and 1835, a small territory between New Hampshire and Quebec declared itself an independent nation. With its own constitution and elected government, this unrecognized micro-state existed to evade taxes from both the United States and Britain.

This forgotten republic emerged because the border between Canada and the U.S. was poorly defined after the War of 1812. Fed up with competing tax collectors and legal threats from two superpowers, the three hundred local residents simply decided to govern themselves. Their bold experiment ended when local militias and regional authorities eventually pressured the territory to integrate.
