The Bearded Virgin Saint Wilgefortis

The Bearded Virgin Saint Wilgefortis

Saint Wilgefortis was a legendary noblewoman who grew a miraculous beard to avoid an unwanted marriage. Her prayer for divine intervention worked all too well, leading to a tragic end.

During the 14th century, the story of this saint captivated many as a symbol of resistance against forced marriage. When her father promised her to a king, she begged God to make her physically unattractive to stop the wedding. A beard sprouted overnight, causing the suitor to immediately call off the engagement. Enraged by her transformation, her father ordered her crucifixion, turning her into a unique martyr of medieval folklore.
