Treating Abstract Ideas as Physical Reality

Reification occurs when we mistake abstract concepts, like theories or social roles, for tangible physical objects. This psychological shortcut causes us to treat mental constructs as if they hold the same substance as a rock or a tree.

We often fall into this trap by assuming that names or categories are real things rather than just labels we created to describe patterns. For instance, people might treat an economic trend as a living force capable of being angry or greedy. Recognizing this helps us distinguish between our mental models and the actual world. It is the core reason why many people struggle to separate the map from the territory.
