Why You Might Not Be In Control

Agency is the capacity to make choices, but your sense of control can actually be an illusion. Even when we feel like we are steering our lives, our brains often initiate actions before we are consciously aware of them.

Philosophers have long debated if true freedom exists or if our decisions are merely the result of prior physical causes. Interestingly, neuroscience shows that the brain prepares for movement well before a person consciously decides to act. This suggests that the feeling of intent might be a post-hoc story we tell ourselves. Understanding agency helps us navigate the complex relationship between personal willpower and the biological reality of the human mind.
