Despite being born into the ultra-wealthy Astor and Stuyvesant families, Chanler preferred the company of canvases to high society. He spent years mastering his craft at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in France, where he developed a bold, bizarre style. His work stood out so vividly that it became a highlight of the famous 1913 Armory Show. Peers often described him as deeply eccentric, noting that his wild personality was just as colorful as his famous murals.
