The Radical Transformation of Paris

Paris was once a cramped, medieval maze until it was almost entirely demolished and rebuilt. Napoleon III ordered these drastic changes to turn narrow, disease-ridden streets into the iconic wide boulevards we recognize today.

Before the 1850s, central Paris was a dark, tangled network of alleys that were nearly impossible to navigate. Baron Haussmann oversaw the destruction of thousands of historic buildings to create straight lines of sight and improved sanitation systems. While these modern updates were hailed as a triumph of urban planning, they also displaced many poorer residents from the city center. This massive project effectively invented the modern European capital model.
