The Cult That Believed In Starships
Members of Heaven's Gate lived in total isolation, convinced that the comet Hale-Bopp was concealing an extraterrestrial spacecraft. They believed shedding their bodies would allow them to board this ship and reach a higher evolutionary level.
Founded in the 1970s, this group viewed the human body as a temporary vessel rather than a permanent identity. Their leader, Marshall Applewhite, convinced dozens of followers to abandon their families and renounce worldly possessions. They spent years preparing for what they called the Next Level, viewing their final act as a necessary departure from Earth. It remains one of the most chilling examples of how extreme belief can override human survival instincts.
