The Hidden World of Mind Blindness

Some people lack a visual imagination entirely and cannot conjure mental images at will. This condition, known as aphantasia, means that trying to picture a loved one’s face results in only conceptual knowledge, not a picture.

While most people can see a movie-like projection in their minds, those with aphantasia experience their thoughts in total darkness. They can describe an apple perfectly, but they cannot see its color or shape in their mind's eye. Interestingly, many people go their entire lives without realizing others are actually seeing images. It is not a disorder but rather a different way for the human brain to process information.
