The Frog That Is Actually A Chicken
Despite its name, the mountain chicken is a giant frog, not a bird. It was once a popular local delicacy, but a deadly fungal disease has pushed this massive amphibian to the brink of extinction.
Native to the Caribbean, this frog earned its bird-like name because of its large size and the fact that its meat was historically considered as delicious as poultry. It can grow up to eight inches long, making it one of the largest frogs in the world. Unfortunately, it is now critically endangered due to the rapid spread of a lethal chytrid fungus. Conservationists are currently working in international zoos to breed them in safety, hoping to eventually return them to their natural habitat.
