The Crystal That Vanished Forever

Some crystal structures exist briefly before suddenly becoming impossible to recreate. Once they transform into a more stable version, the original form can vanish from the entire world, never to be seen again in a lab.

This bizarre phenomenon occurs when a substance has multiple structural shapes for the same chemical makeup. Scientists call the lost versions disappearing polymorphs because they seem to simply lose the ability to form. Often, the new, more stable structure dominates the environment so thoroughly that it blocks the old one from returning.
