The Five Second Rule Is A Myth
Contrary to popular belief, bacteria can instantly transfer to food the moment it touches the floor. Dropping food for only a second is enough to pick up harmful germs regardless of the speed.
The idea that a quick recovery saves your snack from contamination is simply not supported by science. Moisture level and the type of surface are actually the most critical factors in how much bacteria jumps onto your food. You might pick up thousands of microbes in a split second if the floor is damp. It is always safer to toss anything that has taken a tumble rather than counting the seconds.
