The Multiracial Revolt That Burned Jamestown

In 1676, a diverse coalition of Virginians joined forces to torch their own capital. These rebels, composed of various classes and races, united against the governor to demand aggressive action against local tribes.

This uprising began when Nathaniel Bacon led an armed group against the colonial government after being denied permission to attack Native Americans. The movement grew into a massive rebellion that chased the governor out of Jamestown and ultimately left the entire town in ashes. Because the insurgents included enslaved people, free Black people, and white indentured servants, it terrified the ruling elite. In response, authorities passed new laws to strictly separate the races and prevent such a dangerous alliance from ever forming again.
