Life was incredibly difficult for the Lincoln family, as Robert witnessed the premature deaths of all three of his brothers. He grew up under the immense pressure of his father's legacy and eventually carved out a distinguished path as Secretary of War. It is remarkable that he achieved such high office given the profound personal loss he navigated throughout his childhood. He lived long enough to attend the dedication ceremonies for both his father's memorial and the memorial for his mother.
