A Symphony of Pure Terror

This 1961 masterpiece for 52 strings uses chaotic, piercing sounds to recreate the horror of an atomic blast. Remarkably, the composer did not even title it until after he heard the finished recording.

Krzysztof Penderecki originally named this avant-garde work 8'37, focusing solely on the duration of the piece. Upon hearing the intense, dissonant orchestral screams he had created, he felt they captured the suffering of Hiroshima. He renamed the composition to honor the victims, turning an abstract experiment into a powerful historical monument. It remains one of the most haunting sonic depictions of war ever written.
