The Myth of the Mozart Effect

The Myth of the Mozart Effect

Listening to Mozart does not actually make you smarter. While a 1993 study showed a brief boost in spatial tasks, it was merely a temporary mood lift rather than a lasting increase in intelligence.

The original research focused on college students completing spatial reasoning puzzles after hearing classical piano music. Media outlets quickly exaggerated these findings into the idea that classical music could boost childhood development. However, follow-up studies proved that any enjoyable music or even an engaging story could produce the same temporary result. We now know that being in a good mood is the real key to performing well on these tests.
