Slow Food Began As A Political Protest
Slow Food launched in 1986 not just to promote good cooking, but to stop the encroachment of global fast-food culture. It remains a radical stance against the efficiency of mass production.
The movement started when Carlo Petrini protested a McDonald's opening near the historic Spanish Steps in Rome. Rather than just celebrating recipes, the group demands that we protect local farmers and regional biodiversity from being washed away by globalization. By focusing on food quality over quantity, they fight back against the culture of waste found in modern industry. It serves as a reminder that what we choose to eat is a powerful vote for the kind of world we want to inhabit.
