A Clear View Into Our Galaxy

Most of the Milky Way core is hidden behind thick, suffocating clouds of interstellar dust. Astronomers found a rare, transparent hole in this debris called Baade’s Window that acts as a telescope’s shortcut to the galactic center.

Usually, the center of our galaxy is completely blocked from our view by dense layers of gas and space dust. Baade’s Window provides a unique, clear patch of sky that allows us to peer deep into the heart of the Milky Way. By looking through this cosmic gap, scientists can study the massive Sagittarius Star Cloud and gather data that would otherwise be impossible to see. It is effectively a natural porthole into the belly of our home galaxy.
