Early Modern Humans Were Not The First Europeans

The ancestors of modern Europeans were not the only humans to inhabit the continent. For thousands of years, they coexisted and interbred with Neanderthals before those populations eventually vanished.

While we often think of history as a straight line, early European history was a complex web of overlapping groups. Many early human lineages went completely extinct, leaving no descendants behind. Only specific groups managed to survive the harsh conditions of the last Ice Age to become the ancestors of modern hunter-gatherers. It is fascinating to realize that our own genetic history is the result of such a narrow survival window.
