Seeing Magnetic Properties Inside Your Brain
Standard MRI scans show tissue anatomy, but a newer technique called QSM reveals the magnetic fingerprint of the brain. It detects hidden minerals like iron or calcium that traditional scans completely miss.
While doctors usually look at the shape of your brain in an MRI, QSM maps how different substances interact with magnetic fields. This allows scientists to spot tiny deposits of iron or changes in oxygen levels that are invisible to regular imaging. It is currently changing how we study diseases like Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis. By tracking these mineral shifts, we get a much clearer picture of how the brain is functioning on a chemical level.
