Animals That Practice Natural Medicine
Animals actively self-medicate to cure their own illnesses. By eating specific plants or rubbing insects on their fur, they treat infections and repel parasites without any human instruction.
This practice, known as zoopharmacognosy, shows that animals possess a deep instinctual knowledge of their environment. Great apes have been observed swallowing rough leaves to scrub out intestinal worms, while some birds coat their feathers in ants to use the formic acid as an antiseptic. It suggests that medical intuition is far older than humanity itself. Researchers are now studying these natural behaviors to find new ways to treat human diseases.
