The Elevator That Never Stops

A Paternoster lift is a continuously moving loop of open compartments that never stops for passengers. You simply step on and off while the elevator is in motion, requiring perfect timing and agility.

Invented in the late nineteenth century, these elevators allow many people to travel simultaneously without waiting for a lobby call. Because the compartments are open and constantly rotating, they feel more like a slow-moving vertical conveyor belt than a traditional lift. Most countries banned new installations due to safety concerns for the elderly and those with mobility issues. Today, only a handful of these functional relics remain in operation worldwide.
