The Rodents Once Considered Gourmet Delicacies

Ancient Romans actually raised fat dormice as a culinary delicacy. They kept these rodents in specialized ceramic jars called gliraria to fatten them up for elaborate feasts.

While we might see them as pests today, the Roman nobility prized these creatures as high-end snacks. They would feed the dormice walnuts and chestnuts inside darkened containers to mimic hibernation and build up body fat. After reaching a plump size, the rodents were roasted, glazed with honey, and sprinkled with poppy seeds. It is a strange reminder that even the most unassuming animals have occasionally found their way onto the menus of history.
