Phantom islands were landmasses that appeared on globes for centuries despite never actually existing. These ghost islands persisted because explorers often relied on maps that copied errors from one another rather than reality.

Sailors would often report sighting land during foggy days or through optical illusions, creating myths that cartographers then copied onto official charts. Some of these non-existent places remained on major maps for hundreds of years. The process of proving they were fake is often called undiscovery.
