The Accidental Creation of Killer Bees

Africanized bees were created by human intervention, not natural evolution. Scientists intentionally crossbred African and European honey bees to boost honey production, but the resulting hybrid escaped and spread rapidly.

In the 1950s, researchers in Brazil hoped to develop a more productive bee for tropical climates by crossing hardy African bees with local stock. The plan took a turn when several swarms escaped into the wild and began breeding with native populations. These bees gained their infamous reputation for being extremely defensive and quick to swarm when threatened. Today, they remain a fascinating example of how unintended consequences can radically shift an ecosystem.
