The Centipede With Odd-Numbered Legs

Unlike many creatures with symmetrical pairs, this soil centipede displays a fascinating gender-based quirk. Males and females possess a different number of leg pairs, ensuring that the total count is always an odd number.

While we might expect centipedes to have a uniform design, this species mixes things up by varying its leg count between 51 and 57 pairs. It is rare to see such distinct sexual dimorphism in leg structure within a single species. Beyond its odd walking anatomy, this creature sports a beautiful, purplish marbled pattern on its slender orange frame. It spends its life tunneling through soil, hidden away from the world beneath our feet.
