The Secret Language of Rabbits

In the classic novel Watership Down, author Richard Adams invented an entire language for rabbits. Called Lapine, this fictional tongue is used by the characters to name their friends, myths, and surroundings.

The name Lapine is derived from the French word for rabbit, but it functions as a fully immersive world-building tool. Adams created dozens of unique words to help readers visualize the rabbits' perspective on nature and their environment. The language appears consistently throughout the book series and even in the various film adaptations. It remains one of literature's most charming examples of a constructed language designed specifically to reflect an animal's worldview.
