Before modern plastics, a natural latex called gutta-percha transformed the world. It was the first material to perfectly insulate undersea telegraph cables, effectively allowing the first global internet.

Harvested from Southeast Asian trees, this rigid sap becomes soft and moldable when heated, making it the original thermoplastic. Its natural resistance to saltwater and electricity made it the only choice for the massive telegraph cables spanning the ocean floor in the 19th century. Beyond communications, it was even used to create early dental fillings and golf balls. It truly served as the backbone of our first interconnected age.
