Mentorship Through Ancient Greek Romance

In ancient Greece, the eromenos was a young male partner in a formalized relationship with an older man. Far from simple romance, this bond was a deeply structured educational rite of passage for elite youths.

These relationships were socially sanctioned and intended to prepare the adolescent for adulthood in Greek society. The older mentor, or erastes, provided guidance on politics, warfare, and ethics.
