The Raving Women of Ancient Greece

The Maenads were divine followers of Dionysus who literally earned their name as the raving ones. Driven into a wild, frenzied state, they abandoned their homes to worship the god of wine in the deep wilderness.

These legendary women were known for their ecstatic rituals that took place far away from the constraints of city life. They were often depicted wearing fox skins and carrying staffs topped with pinecones as they danced in honor of Bacchus.
