Before it became a tranquil public park, this vast Tokyo green space served as the defensive heart of Edo Castle. Its expansive gravel grounds were designed to offer soldiers a clear view of any approaching attackers.

Today, visitors stroll through a serene landscape of black pine trees right outside the Emperor's home. However, the wide, crushed-stone paths are actually a relic of feudal security measures meant to prevent enemies from sneaking up on the shogunate. It is fascinating to realize that one of Tokyo's most peaceful gardens was once a high-stakes military watchtower zone.
