The Myth of Salting Ancient Cities

Conquerors did not actually destroy Carthage by salting its soil. While the ritual of spreading salt appears in ancient texts as a curse against rebuilding, there is no historical proof it ever physically occurred.

Sowing a city with salt was a powerful symbolic gesture in the ancient Near East intended to ensure the land would never be inhabited again. Medieval writers later popularized the story of Carthage being salted to highlight the absolute defeat of their enemies. Historians now view these dramatic accounts as poetic legends rather than military reality. Real soil salting would have been prohibitively expensive and logistically impossible for large ancient armies.
