The Roman Empire did not truly end when the city of Rome fell in 476 AD. The Eastern half continued to thrive for nearly another thousand years until 1453.

While schoolbooks often focus on the collapse of the West, the Byzantine Empire was the direct, legal continuation of Roman rule. Based in Constantinople, this sophisticated state preserved ancient knowledge and culture long after the capital in Italy had lost its power. It served as a vital bridge between the classical world and the Renaissance. By the time it finally fell, it had survived for over a millennium past the traditional end date.
