Ancient Engineering Without A Central Pillar

These ancient stone tombs stand tall without a single supporting pillar. Builders simply stacked circular layers of rock inward, letting gravity and precision balancing hold the entire heavy dome together.

Known as tholos tombs, these structures use a technique called corbelling. Each ring of stone is placed slightly further inward than the one beneath it, creating a self-supporting cone. Once the final capstone is dropped into the center, the weight locks everything into place. It is a brilliant display of physics from thousands of years ago that created soaring chambers without complex machinery.
